However, in the 1990s it was finally revealed this story was completely untrue. The original script had never included a shipwreck - it was simply too scrappy and poor to be used.Commentaires longs: Bolton was a tax exile in London, and P.G.Wodehouse refused to leave France, so they created the work “long-distance” and posted it to Broadway. The producer, Arthur Freedley, was horrified with the result, but because they were very distinguished theatre writers, he did not want to damage his relationship with them. He called in Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse to create a new book, and in order to help Bolton and Wodehouse save face, the story was concocted that their original script had been abandoned because it involved a shipwreck (completely untrue!). Shortly before rehearsals started there had been the fatal sinking of the USS Morro Castle off the coast of New Jersey, providing the perfect excuse. Freedley announced that because the original writers were out of the country and time was too short, a new team had to take over and re-write the script. This totally false story only came to light after it had been accepted by three generations of theatre historians.

There aren't many ultra-modern, absurdist comedies floating around the Great White Way at all, so Meteor Shower is really in its own lane in terms of theatrical genres. Steve Martin's script imagines various scenarios that are played out over the course of one evening in California, with outcomes that vary from the trivial to the outlandish. As Gerald (Key) and Laura (Benanti) come over for an evening soirée to gaze at the meteor shower overhead with Norman (Shamos) and Corky (Schumer) at their house in Ojai, it's clear from the get-go that this encounter is going to be nothing short of explosive. May the mind games (and the lashings of physical comedy) ensue...
The four actors of the piece are perfectly cast and each shines as one-by-one they prove their comedy chops. Although Ms. Schumer is undoubtedly the driving force at the box office, these four are equally equipped on the stage and share equal portions of the laughter.
Are these home-wrecking intruders real? Are they just personifications of Norman and Corky's consciences? And how exactly do you create a man with a steaming hole in his chest after a meteor collision on stage? The show opens and closes with the 1974 obscurity "Neighborhood," which suggests this will be a scrapbook of memories."
Ben Brantley, the theatre critic for The New York Times wrote that the revue "is a strangely homogenized tribute to one of popular music's most protean songwriting teams...There has obviously been a decision not to go for literal period nostalgia, so the songs are freed from their distinctive original contexts...Too often, though, the performers are simply singing into space without any ostensible reason for being there."
The theatre critic for The Guardian (London), noted that the London cast consists of "acting singers rather than singing actors, which suits a show where there's almost no acting to be done. Whew - no pesky plot development or subtexts, just a glut of glowing pop tunes...There's no attempt at chronology, or even biography."
According to the theatre critic for the Washington Post, Peter Marks, the revue "never quite attained smash-hit status", but it made popular the musical fashioned on the existing work of "pop composers already beloved by baby boomers."
