A Bronx Tale (2016-11-Longacre Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Longacre Theatre (Broadway - Etats-Unis)
Durée : 1 an 8 mois
Nombre :
Première Preview : Thursday 03 November 2016
Première : Thursday 01 December 2016
Dernière : Sunday 05 August 2018
Mise en scène : Jerry Zaks • Robert De Niro
Chorégraphie : Sergio Trujillo
Producteur :
Avec : Nick Cordero (Sonny), Richard H. Blake (Lorenzo), Bobby Conte Thornton (Calogero), Ariana DeBose (Jane), Lucia Giannetta (Rosina), Bradley Gibson (Tyrone)
Commentaires : Directors Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks bring their triumphant New York musical to Broadway, following an acclaimed run in Millburn. Mirroring the gritty setting and finger-clicking music of fellow Big Apple musical Jersey Boys, A Bronx Tale takes place in the early 1960s, and follows the fortunes of a local Bronx kid who is drawn into the world of organized crime, much to the horror of his bus driver father. The story is based on actor Chazz Palminteri's one man show, which De Niro previously adapted for the big screen in 1993.
Presse : "Sometimes plain old pasta with red sauce is just what the doctor ordered. 'A Bronx Tale'... might be called the musical-theater equivalent of that classic comfort food. It doesn’t break ground or dazzle with an unusual recipe — like, say, mixing rap and American history — but it delivers reliable pleasures with polished professionalism and infectious energy." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"'A Bronx Tale' at the Longacre Theatre packs some tasty ear candy and fine performances, but it’s as conventional as it gets and could use a surprise or two." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Aside from Machiavelli-quoting mobster Bobby—played with expertly calibrated swagger by Nick Cordero—none of the characters command interest, and Alan Menken and Glenn Slater’s doo-wop–heavy score is far too lightweight for a plot that features murders and racial hate crimes."
Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"There's no point giving a Bronx cheer to this formulaic but entertaining crowd-pleaser." Frank Scheck for Hollywood Reporter

"After the 1989 solo show, the 1993 movie directed by Robert De Niro and the 2007 Broadway production staged by Jerry Zaks, where else could this show go but back to Broadway as a musical starring Nick Cordero? Is it a good fit? Not really, but there’s something nicely symmetrical about the material progress. Next up: surely an opera." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : Ever since this show was first performed (in 1925) it was known the original book, created by Guy Bolton and P.G.Wodehouse, had to be re-written at the last moment because the show involved a shipwreck scene and this would be too tasteless following a real-life shipwreck at that time. However, in the 1990s it was finally revealed this story was completely untrue. The original script had never included a shipwreck - it was simply too scrappy and poor to be used.
Commentaires longs: Bolton was a tax exile in London, and P.G.Wodehouse refused to leave France, so they created the work “long-distance” and posted it to Broadway. The producer, Arthur Freedley, was horrified with the result, but because they were very distinguished theatre writers, he did not want to damage his relationship with them. He called in Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse to create a new book, and in order to help Bolton and Wodehouse save face, the story was concocted that their original script had been abandoned because it involved a shipwreck (completely untrue!). Shortly before rehearsals started there had been the fatal sinking of the USS Morro Castle off the coast of New Jersey, providing the perfect excuse. Freedley announced that because the original writers were out of the country and time was too short, a new team had to take over and re-write the script. This totally false story only came to light after it had been accepted by three generations of theatre historians.

Commentaires : Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner Bette Midler (Fiddler on the Roof, The First Wives Club) returns to the Broadway stage in one of the greatest musicals of all time - Hello, Dolly! Starring alongside David Hyde Pierce, Ms Midler leads the revival of Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart's glorious comedy as the redoubtable matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, following in the footsteps of Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey and one Barbra Streisand.
Presse : "Exceedingly bright and brassy revival... Back on a Broadway stage in a book musical for the first time (can it be?) since “Fiddler on the Roof” half a century ago, Ms. Midler is generating a succession of seismic responses that make Trump election rallies look like Quaker prayer meetings." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Hello, blockbuster! They don’t make ’em like they used to — and that goes double for Broadway’s dazzling revival of “Hello, Dolly!” thanks to the show itself and its above-the-title supernova, Bette Midler... Type out all the superlatives you can because nights like this in the theater — in which tingles continue from overture to final bow at the Shubert Theatre — make you feel overjoyed. That is a tonic for troubled times!" Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Hello, Dolly! offers classic musical theater without a hint of apology. Jerry Herman’s exuberant score is a show-tune bonanza, and Warren Carlyle’s choreography distills showbiz dancing to its essence; the show elicits grins with simple bounces and kicks, and earns waves of applause with a cakewalk. Midler hasn’t appeared in a Broadway musical in almost 50 years. It was worth the wait. We are all her waiters now." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"It's perhaps a measure of my great admiration for this superlative production that I didn't even get to Jerry Herman's iconic score. The 23-piece orchestra plays it to perfection. And with the Divine Miss M to sing it, we've got a match made in heaven!" Roma Torre for NY1

"As a shot of sparkling, old-fashioned popular entertainment of a kind largely erased by the age of cynicism, this deluxe revival of Hello, Dolly! is about as good as it gets, crowned by star casting that fits like a glove." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Jerry Herman’s 1964 musical comedy is one of the great audience shows, so it’s a relief to report that helmer Jerry Zaks and choreographer Warren Carlyle have done a great restoration job on the old girl, while refraining from the urge to tart her up for modern tastes." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Meteor Shower (2017-11-Booth Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Booth Theatre (Broadway - Etats-Unis)

Première Preview : Wednesday 01 November 2017
Première : Wednesday 29 November 2017

Mise en scène : Jerry Zaks
Chorégraphie :
Producteur :
Avec : Amy Schumer (as Corky), Laura Benanti (as Laura), Keegan-Michael Key (as Gerald), and Jeremy Shamos (as Norm)
Commentaires : Emmy Award winner - and one of the world's top comedians - Amy Schumer is making her Broadway debut this fall as she stars in Hollywood legend and Tony Award nominee Steve Martin's new comedy Meteor Shower! The limited engagement plays Broadway's Booth Theatre from November 1, 2017, through to January 21, 2018, with an official opening set for November 29.

Ms. Schumer is joined on stage by a cast of stage and screen veterans including Tony Award winner Laura Benanti, Emmy Award winner Keegan-Michael Key and Tony Award nominee Jeremy Shamos, for the comedy that promises to have a meteoric impact on the Broadway season!

There aren't many ultra-modern, absurdist comedies floating around the Great White Way at all, so Meteor Shower is really in its own lane in terms of theatrical genres. Steve Martin's script imagines various scenarios that are played out over the course of one evening in California, with outcomes that vary from the trivial to the outlandish. As Gerald (Key) and Laura (Benanti) come over for an evening soirée to gaze at the meteor shower overhead with Norman (Shamos) and Corky (Schumer) at their house in Ojai, it's clear from the get-go that this encounter is going to be nothing short of explosive. May the mind games (and the lashings of physical comedy) ensue...

The four actors of the piece are perfectly cast and each shines as one-by-one they prove their comedy chops. Although Ms. Schumer is undoubtedly the driving force at the box office, these four are equally equipped on the stage and share equal portions of the laughter.

Are these home-wrecking intruders real? Are they just personifications of Norman and Corky's consciences? And how exactly do you create a man with a steaming hole in his chest after a meteor collision on stage? These and so many more questions can be answered with a trip to Meteor Shower at the Booth Theatre on Broadway!
Presse : I wish I had more to say, but I’ll admit that I am at a loss for words after seeing Meteor Shower, Steve Martin’s absurd new comedy at the Booth Theatre. What does one say about an entertainment this lightweight, this pointless, this short? - NY Theatre Guide

Commentaires : Was originally slated to close on January 1, 2011, but was forced to shutter early for Webber's new version of The Wizard of Oz.
Whoopi was forced to end her run early, but returned for one performance on October 22, and two each on October 23 and 25.
Presse : FIONA MOUNTFORD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "It’s a wimple-wibbling, habit-forming triumph." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "A show that feels less like a personally driven work of art than a commercial exploitation of an existing franchise...What was originally a fairytale fantasy, however, makes little sense in its new, vulgarised incarnation." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "A rather sweet, sentimental film has been hyped up, coarsened... There’s less deft comedy, but much more music, most of it indebted to the 1970s, where the action is now set." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Sister Act proves more enjoyable on stage than it did on film...the cheers and standing ovation at the end were both genuine and deserved...With slick and witty choreography...and pacy direction...I suspect this musical comedy about a nun on the run could prove habit-forming...." LISA MARTLAND for THE STAGE says, "Highly recommended." QUENTIN LETTS for THE DAILY MAIL says, "I hated its artistic laziness, its predictability, its incuriosity, its idea that disco is divine..."

Commentaires : On January 31, 2011, several theatre sources reported that Raven-Symoné (of Cosby Show, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, and That's So Raven! fame) would be replacing Patina Miller.
Recorded at the matinee on February 8, 2012 for the Lincoln Center Archives.
Presse : "Tame, innocuous and frankly a little dull." Charles Isherwood for NY Times / "A blessed event has landed on Broadway. ... a feel-good crowd-pleaser worth celebrating." Joe Dziemianowicz for NY Daily News / "One of the season’s happiest surprises."
Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post / "Delivered with exceptional glee and polish."
Jeremy Gerard for Bloomberg / "A ramshackle yet agreeable film comedy with plausibility issues has here become an even more ramshackle and outlandish musical comedy that consistently diminishes its source." Erik Haagensen for Back Stage / "A lively and extremely funny musical comedy with an infectious score of new disco numbers" Robert Feldberg for The Record / "It’s not the most brilliant musical ever written, but plenty of laughter rocks the rafters." Michael Sommers for Newsroom Jersey / "Despite some missteps, Sister Act comes together to provide payoff in laughs, emotional uplift and spectacle. " David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter / "Glossy, but seems like a worn set of tires repatched too often." Steven Suskin for Variety

Version 18

Smokey Joe's Café (1995-03-Virginia Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: August Wilson Theatre (Broadway - Etats-Unis)

Durée : 4 ans 10 mois 3 semaines
Nombre : 25 previews - 2036 représentations
Première Preview : Thursday 09 February 1995
Première : Thursday 02 March 1995
Dernière : Sunday 16 January 2000
Mise en scène : Jerry Zaks
Chorégraphie : Joey McKneely
Producteur :
Avec : Ken Ard, Adrian Bailey, Brenda Braxton, Victor Trent Cook, B. J. Crosby, Pattie Darcy Jones, DeLee Lively, Frederick B. Owens, Michael Park, Louis St. Louis
Presse : The theatre critic for the magazine Variety, in reviewing the Los Angeles tryout, noted that "the songwriters, director Jerry Zaks and choreographer Joey McKneely don't do enough packaging of the material, don't go far enough taking songs first heard on transistor radios and re-imagining them for the stage...There are a couple of halfhearted attempts at structure. The show opens and closes with the 1974 obscurity "Neighborhood," which suggests this will be a scrapbook of memories."
Ben Brantley, the theatre critic for The New York Times wrote that the revue "is a strangely homogenized tribute to one of popular music's most protean songwriting teams...There has obviously been a decision not to go for literal period nostalgia, so the songs are freed from their distinctive original contexts...Too often, though, the performers are simply singing into space without any ostensible reason for being there."
The theatre critic for The Guardian (London), noted that the London cast consists of "acting singers rather than singing actors, which suits a show where there's almost no acting to be done. Whew - no pesky plot development or subtexts, just a glut of glowing pop tunes...There's no attempt at chronology, or even biography."
According to the theatre critic for the Washington Post, Peter Marks, the revue "never quite attained smash-hit status", but it made popular the musical fashioned on the existing work of "pop composers already beloved by baby boomers."

Version 19

Smokey Joe's Café (1996-10-Prince of Wales Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Original London
Théâtre: Prince of Wales Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 1 an 11 mois 2 semaines
Nombre : 813 représentations
Première Preview : Tuesday 15 October 1996
Première : Wednesday 23 October 1996
Dernière : Saturday 03 October 1998
Mise en scène : Jerry Zaks
Chorégraphie : Joey McKneely
Producteur :
Avec : Victor Trent Cook, BJ Cosby, DeLee Lively, Deb Lyons, Stephanie Pope, Devin Richards, Robert Torti, Alton White and Harrison White.
Commentaires : A straightforward compilation show of 39 numbers sung and danced by a cast of six black and three white performers, and a seven-piece band. There was no attempt to tell a story or create a plot – just two hours devoted to the music of Leiber & Stoller. A huge hit on Broadway, it was also highly praised when the all-American cast transferred to the West End, and managed a run of nearly two years. The highlight of the show was DeLee Lively in the number “Teach Me How to Shimmy”
